Stigma in the new century

In the back of my head, I always worried that I’d have to watch my father waste away. While the chemo doesn’t affect him too much, I still worry that the treatment could turn around and cause more problems. As it is, he’s doing okay despite the side effects, which were expected. Superman has also gone back to work on a semi-regular basis – I am going to kill the bloody oncologist for saying he could.

What I don’t understand is how hush-hush the discussions are about his type of cancer. It’s a very open environment when we’re dealing with the oncologist and nurses, who are the most amazing people ever (barring the oncologist’s comment about work) and discuss anything and everything. But outside the hospital it’s like talking about AIDS in the 70s. It’s disgusting. Cancer is cancer, no matter what type it is, it should all be approached openly. We’re not living in the fucking Dark Ages.

Yet, this cancer is the most prevalent and affects more people than any other. It’s called colorectal cancer, get the fucking hell over it.

I really hate people sometimes.

I think…
