Bloc Party 2008

Posted on December 1, 2008 at 8:26 pm

“Who’s Bloc Party?”
“WAT.”

Look, I may have heard a couple of songs here and there, but I would never have been able to actually name the band. My sheer laziness at attending proper gigs comes from a) not being able sit down and b) horrifying fangirls/boys. Sitting down is very important to someone who spends 99.99% of her time in high heels.

Anyway, presented by the opportunity to attend a real, ‘proper’ gig last week, I obliged, thinking I’d just end up the innocent bystander laughing at fanboyish tendencies.

The morning after agreeing to tag along, I received a cd containing Bloc Party’s first album and half of their second. I did look at it in slight distaste, expecting the the cd to radiate emo. Bypassing my usual morning serving of Spamalot, I gave Bloc Party a chance.

Well, I was assured my compadre has some taste in music, I did like enjoy it quite a bit. Although I horrified him by saying they sounded like Coldplay at times bwahahaha!! Though to be honest at times they reminded me very much of the Smashing Pumpkins. The play of lyrics with some of their songs was very, very captivating.

The gig was at an open-air park, with the gates opening a good few hours before the main act came on. We sat around in the sun, occassionally getting up to find more alcohol or food. The opening acts were nothing to shout about, though.

The sucky thing about a rock gig is when the filler music switched to Bootylicious, wanting get down was not a good idea. :( But you are meant to get up and shake it to Bootylicious! That is the whole point, otherwise why play it?! Also I think I was in a slightly rebellious mode, surrounded by a mix of rockers and rednecks, the urge to go all hip hop was too great. Maybe even to prove that yes, I listened to more than ‘boring’ music.

When Bloc Party finally came on, it was close to 9pm. Got dragged to my feet and we managed to squeeze into the edge of the crowd. There was a mosh pit going on as well. If it wasn’t a school night I’m sure my compadre would have been suitably drunk and in the thick of it. And I’d have enough blackmail pictures to buy Balenciaga bags in every model and colour!

Having said that, the loser bought a concert t-shirt in a rather hideous colour.

The performance was a lot of fun. They’re a great band live, I could not have asked for a better first live gig experience. I recognized some of their songs, but not knowing all was okay, because you could still get into it. There were some pretty tall rednecks in front so they blocked my view at times. Compadre tried to point out the lead guitarist, and I totally could not see anything so he had to lift me up at one point.

We left just as they came back onstage for the encore. Avoiding the nightmarish traffic getting out was a priority. After all, we are working professionals. My compadre had seen what he needed to see, so he was a happy fanboy.

We were so dead on our feet today, though.

Tee hee hee

Singing teacher is awesome because she talked about Russell Watson, and covered one of his songs wot isn’t Funiculi Funicula. XD

Shame she got the team that met Manchester United in the final game of the 1999 Premiership season wrong. XD

So I’ve started a six-week course in singing. Haz is convinced that we will be going for karaoke (haha, no) to test out my new ’skills’. So far the course has been very general, the kind where you don’t need to be able to read music, but it helps. Omg, flashback to piano lessons. It’s still more encouraging than piano lessons, or perhaps the teacher is the more understanding type. You can’t quite go wrong with a teacher who says anyone can sing, and isn’t afraid to squeak out a note even though she can’t quite reach it. No fear.

The teacher seems to cater to people who may choose to enter a choir after the course. Uh, no thanks. I have enough on my plate with flamenco, that in itself takes up way too much time, what with flamenco including theory lessons as well. There’s a summer course coming up as well, with a guest teacher from Spain.

Other than extra-curricular activities, it’s been a mad run with ups and downs and lots of wtfs, though not in a bad way. It does make for more interesting reflections.

Long weekend goal: football, chill out (not the same time as watching football), listen to music, work on Guitar Hero and refine air guitar skills.

Or, How To Play It Cool

I arrived in abnormally hot and humid Singapore Friday evening, checking into my hotel and prepping for my London 2007 compadres’ arrival the next day. My solo night in Singapore was spent wandering the malls and having a Mos Burger, before finally ending up at The Raffles Hotel, where, like so many unsuspecting tourists, paid SGD$25 for a Singapore Sling.

Papa insisted that it was one of the things I just had to do while in Singapore. And I couldn’t have a Singapore Sling at the hotel I was staying, no, it had to be at its birthplace, the Raffles Hotel.

The next morning was perfect timing. I had obtained breakfast and, most importantly, Starbucks coffee (I LOVE YOU) just as Haz and Lil arrived. Snuck them up to the hotel room and made them shower. They smelled really bad after the overnight train ride. :P

We got ready and headed back down to Starbucks for more coffee, lunch, and checking out the stage door at the Esplanade Theatre.

We Will Rock You is, and always will be, the most awesome musical I have ever watched. The energy it gives out is electrifying, and when the audience responds, it’s better than a high.

This audience was amazing. Once again, our official We Will Rock You scarf (from London, was not sold in Singapore) ensured we were noticed. By the cast, and at one of the shops, when the salesgirl exclaimed, “You’re the guys with the scarf!! I was at the show just now, you guys were so cool!!”

We won points for awesome, and we haven’t even gotten to the stage door yet.

Distracting pictures and music books

Posted on August 15, 2006 at 7:01 pm

In a completely dorky moment at the music store, I encountered in the recesses of the movie scores sheet music section, Selections from The X-Files: The Album, at 90% discount. Ninety per cent!! With distracting pictures in colour!! I squeed like the ultimate dork of a fangirl that I am, and bounced all the way to the cashier.

(You know I’m delirious when I start using lots and lots of italics.)

When I got home, I almost tripped over a package propped up against my bedroom door. We Will Rock You: The Official Book arrived from the UK!! EEEEEEEE~!! More distracting pictures!! In colour!!

Tis a day to kick back with music. :D

When in doubt, blame Uncle Willie

Guitar Hero first came to my attention via Wil Wheaton, who had been ranting and raving over it continuously, even in exile. The concept seemed fascinating – putting some actual skill to air guitar based on Dance Dance Revolution.

After two weeks of hem-ing and haw-ing, I finally went out and got it. Scarily enough, when I carried the huge box to pay, the guy (who sounded American) at the counter went, “That game is awesome!! Have you tried the demo at the games section? Do you want to go try?” Omg, HELL NO. Playing a game in public only happens when you actually pwn at it. I think he just wanted someone to accompany him so he had an excuse to play, LoL.

Jules naturally declared me completely out of my mind, laughing his guts out when I fucked up Franz Ferdinand’s Take Me Out. Of course I subsequently laughed my guts out when he totally failed at Deep Purple’s Smoke On The Water faster than my mangling of Take Me Out.

Some practice later, we were taking turns (more or less) rocking out and mocking each other. I had to play eight songs just to get to Queen’s Killer Queen. You can blame We Will Rock You for that. ;)

I can’t wait for Guitar Hero II – one of the songs featured is by The Kinks. THE KINKS. And it’s only like my most favourite song by The Kinks EVER. :D
